Happy Spring Fluffy Buddies!

I hope this finds you all well with everything going on. How timely that I just read my emails & here was one from Linda that I copied here. It's a nice recap of all the recalls & has them all together for your reference:

Because of the evolving and ever expanding recall of pet foods and treats visit the American Veterinary Medical Association website www.avma.org and the Food and Drug Administration website www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/petfood.html for the most up-to-date information.

3/31/07: Delmonte recalls dog & cat treats and canned dog food! As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products voluntarily recalled pet treats sold under the Jerky Treats, Gravy Train Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels brands as well as wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is listed at their website www.delmont.com/petfoodrecall.html . The company took this voluntary recall action after learning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Del Monte Pet Products customers can contact their Consumer Hotline at (800) 949-3799 for information about the recall.

3/30/07: Purina's Alpo Prime Cuts in Gravy canned dog food recalled! Nestlé Purina Pet Care Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods.

Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.

The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

See press release for more information and click here for an updated list of Frequently Asked Questions. If you have more questions or concerns, please contact Purina's Office of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-218-5898, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT.

3/30/07: Hill's Prescription MD dry food recall! Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. The voluntary recall of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from sellers. This recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food which contains no wheat gluten.

Consumers should stop using this product and return it for a refund. All Hill's products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled product.

Hill's has been fully cooperating with the FDA since the outset of its investigation and made the decision to voluntarily recall these products in consultation with the FDA. For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-445-5777 or visit www.HillsPet.com for details.

3/17/07: Recalled Pet Food Alert! Menu Foods, Inc., a major manufacturer of dog and cat food, has announced the recall of over 60 million cans and pouches of wet pet food after reports of kidney failure and animal deaths. The recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier produced between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. Product testing has not yet revealed the link explaining the exact cause of illness and death. Most of the recalled products involve 'cuts and gravy' style pet food, consisting of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in either cans or small foil pouches. The pet food was sold in stores operated by Wal-Mart, Safeway, PetSmart Inc., Wegmans, in addition to many others. Menu Foods has listed the brand names and lot numbers of recalled pet food on its Web site: www.menufoods.com/recall

Menu Foods also makes pet food for Procter & Gamble Company, which sells Iams and Eukanuba brands of dog and cat food. See their websites for a listing of the recalled food: www.iams.com and www.eukanuba.com

Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kansas, and Pennsauken, New Jersey.

In response to Menu Foods nationwide recall of wet pet foods, Hill’s® Pet Nutrition, Inc. has announced a voluntary precautionary recall of 13 Science Diet canned cat foods that are co-manufactured by Menu. See their website for details: www.HillsPet.com

I just finished caring for a cat that I needed to take into the hospital suffering from Hepatic Lipidosis-better known as "Fatty Liver Disease". This is a serious situation where the liver gets blocked up by fats. It happens mostly in heavy cats that loose weight quickly for some other reason. It can happen in any cat that doesn't eat for longer than a day or 2. Simply diagnosing the condition that caused the weight loss & why the cat stopped eating does not cure the liver. In Lucy's case the weight loss was most likely a result of hyperthyroidism & she had some unknown infection that probably caused her to stop eating. She was immediately put on the medications to control these 2 problems but the "fatty liver" could only be treated by force-feeding her until she would eat on her own. Sometimes this could take many weeks & there is a 60% chance of success in saving the cat. I'm happy to report that this was the case for Lucy & she is well on her way to the rest of her recovery at home. The most important thing to learn from this is any behavior difference in our pets needs to be evaluated by a Veterinarian quickly. Especially cats that stop eating need to be seen immediately! A couple other things I learned was her urine was a bright yellow as well as her skin . I noticed inside her ears was a good place to see this yellowing of the skin. These were signs of jaundice & time was of the essence for medical treatment. I cannot stress enough the seriousness of quick actions regarding any behavior changes. As silly as it sounds one symptom that I reported when taking Lucy in to the hospital was that she was snuggly! Yes, they looked at me strange at first but this behavior just is not Lucy. As the days went on & the girls told me Lucy was smacking them I was happy to hear she was feeling better!

This is also a good case point in why it is of the utmost importance that cats be checked on at least once a day. In another home I finished up my visits with the cats fine, eating & playing. Another visitor later in the day had the same report. The owner got home & the very next morning the cat was showing signs of not feeling well. Shortly thereafter she took the cat to the veterinarian & he was blocked with bladder stones. Subsequent surgery removed 14 bladder stones! This is a cat that showed absolutely no signs of being ill just the day before! If this cat blocked completely & the urine was backing up into his system his life would be measured in hours, not days. In this situation a pet not checked on for 2 or 3 days could die. Years ago I got a call from a customer late at night asking about signs her cats were showing & I encouraged her to take the cat into the emergency clinic immediately. They informed her had she waited til her regular hospital opened in the morning the cat would not have made it. These are also good examples of why choosing a professional pet sitter is a good choice as we are knowledgeable in these situations & (hopefully!) are more apt to realize there is a problem. Even if it's a one time a day visit to "oversee" the behaviors of the pets could be a critical life-saving decision. I encourage you to tell your family & friends about these situations & suggest they hire a professional. I cannot be happier that all these pets mentioned have made complete recoveries & spending many more years bringing joy & love to their owners.

I have added so many fluffy-buddies to our ever-growing family! I will only mention a few at this time-the ones whose pictures are ready! If you don't see your name mentioned here next time you should! Most of this space will be taken up by Wendy's gang! Most, if not all, of these kittens have gone on to permanent homes since she was fostering them for GRASP at this time. I don't know most of their official names- I named a couple myself: Here is No-Whisk- this adorable cutey lost his whiskers! Then this one I named Mini-Sunny because she looked just like Sunny D: Here are the rest of the kitten pictures: These are her 4 cats: Mattie, Maggie, Bella & Dusty. She also had 2 rabbits: Sabrina & Daisy; 2 guinea pigs: Prince Charming & Carmelitta & our first ferret fluffy buddies: Elly & Tilly. Whew! is that a houseful??? Another group not anywhere numbering like that is: Cleo, Charlie, Tipper, Missy & Abby. How about this cutie-pie bunch!: Snowball, Brooke & Shelby. My shy little guy with his sister: Nathan & Cami. Yes there are homes with only 1 pet! Here is Scout; Another is Copper. Sweet little Chloe. Reese lives with LittleBit. And finally Ziva & Apollo have joined Boots!

Unfortunately we have to say goodbye to our fluffys at times too. At least we know they wait for us at Rainbow Bridge & we will see them again someday. Our hearts go out to the families. I missed being "put in my place" by Maggie recently when I visited with her sister Minnie. Last time I mentioned Sam's passing & now his brother Max has also gone on. I know how loosing them so close to each other feels & my heart goes out to Lindee & her family. Sweet Baili has left us to be with many brothers & sisters Cyndy & her family have lost recently. My sailboater Kitty- I will miss my December visits with her. I tried my hardest to help Esther while I was watching her but sadly she succumbed to her illnesses shortly after her family came home. She gave a valiant fight & I was sad to hear she lost. I only knew Pepperlee briefly while talking to her under the bed, but she was no less special. A very special dog Molson- he was just a sweet, quiet, good boy who was a joy to be in the company of. It was quite a shock to hear that Barney passed. I know Fred & his family are heartbroken. Poor Buzz, went to be with Ozzie way before his time. Finally one of my special needs buddy-Buddy. He left too fast & he will be sadly missed. They have all left taking a part of my heart with them.

Lindee, who works at WalMart, recently brought to my attention a product they sell in the jewelry department- a charm that can be engraved with the picture and names of a loved one. I am waiting for mine to come in of my dear Max. You take your picture in, pick out your charm & they will engrave it. She had one done of her Max & it came out beautiful. If you would like more information I have a flyer with the pictures of the charms available or you can go to Greece Walmart jewelry dept. & see Lindee.

Finally Congratulations to Gabriella! Clorinda's beautiful Ragdoll was one of the 16 finalists in the Cl!X Cutest Pet photo contest! The people at Cl!x said they had such a turnout for this contest that they are already planning next year's!

Enjoy Spring! Enjoy the blooming flowers!

I LUV U BUNCHES!!!
